You Never Ever Quit Ever.
We all face challenges in life.
Whilst I was training for what I thought would be my greatest challenge, a 53km run to the iconic MCG. I was struck down by a condition which would make the run to the G, seem like a walk in the park.
One day I was running laps around the block, the next I was in, not only the fight of my life, but a fight for my life!.
What started out as a sore knee, quickly developed into the most excruciating pain that I had ever endured.
After my mothers intuition and the knees worsening of the pain, I decided to admit myself to the local emergency ward for some medical attention.
Within 12 hours I was being rushed via ambulance to another hospital for emergency surgery.
En route I had received shots of adrenalin and various other intravenous fluids to keep me alive.
Shortly after entering the surgical theatre, they were forced to resuscitate me.
8 operations, an induced coma, and 4 days in intensive care later, and I was back in the land of the living.
I had officially fought off death but now the real challenge awaited me.
I had suffered a rare condition known as Necrotising Fasciitis.
58% of people won’t survive and 87% will suffer an amputation to save their life.
I was alive and fully intact other than the copious amount of flesh which had been removed from my leg in order to save my life. The images were gruesome and graphic.
The surgeons informed me of the trauma and ordeal that I’d made it through, but ensured me that the real battle was still to come. I’d need further operations to prepare the leg for breakthrough technology that would assist in the grafting of skin and ensure that scarring was as minimal as possible.
Due to the nature of the injury, I was told that the recovery process would be a long, painful and arduous one. 6 month minimum before I’d be able to walk properly and unassisted.
This was a lot to take in and when you’re laid up in a hospital bed, unable to move, you need to find some strength to motivate and get you through the challenges that await.
Due to the global pandemic of CoVid, I was unable to see visitors or my beautiful kids. This was extremely hard to deal with and I needed to stay focused and heal as fast as I could.
While on a FaceTime call to my kids, I told them that I would get out as soon as I could so that I could cuddle and kiss them. My daughter looked at me and said,
“I know you will dad, cos you never ever quit ever do you?”.
I knew to get out of hospital and to recover as quickly as possible that I had to have the right frame of mind and focus all my positive energy into healing.
We all have bad days and we all have to find that inner strength. What’s the first thing we do when we are having a bad day?, we drop our heads!.
This was the birth of UNEQE. A clothing brand which is unique in that it is made for the wearer and to remind them that true strength lies within.
